Past issues of CatholicU Magazine

CatholicU, the flagship publication of The Catholic University of America, has been named Alumni Magazine of the Year by the Catholic Press Association (CPA). The University’s magazine competed for the honor against other Catholic colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.

In choosing CatholicU for the award, the judges stated:

"This publication immediately draws in the reader through larger-than-life photos, interesting layouts, and remarkable graphic elements. The colorful use of striking infographics educate and entertain the eye. The design lends room and space for the artfully, master-crafted news and feature stories.

This publication has a little something for everyone, whether it draws in a long-ago graduate, a potential donor, a parent, current student, or a stranger giving it a passing glance. It captures the soul of the institution and every page feels like a heartbeat of the college’s life.

Absolute excellence and worthy of the title of Alumni Magazine of the Year."

Catholic University was honored to be in the category with other high-quality publications such as Loyola University Chicago Magazine (2nd place) and Alverno College Magazine (3rd place).

CatholicU magazine scooped up three other awards in CPA’s 2020 Alumni Magazine Awards Program including:

  • First place in the category of Best Photo Story for “Care and Compassion in the Wake of Maria.” With photography by University photographer Dana Bowler and graphic design by senior designer Kristin Reavey, this visual story takes readers inside the 2019 spring break service trip to Puerto Rico, where nursing students who participate in the University’s Spanish for Health Care Program brought their medical skills to those still suffering in the aftermath of a historic hurricane.
  • Second Place was awarded for Best Feature Article for “The Truth about Intelligence” by Katie Bahr. The article explores the field of intelligence as a career path for students in the University’s Intelligence Studies Program. The article featured original illustration by local artist LA Johnson.
  • Third Place in the category of Best Personality Profile was awarded to “Fueling a Dream,” written by Kevin Burke, associate vice president for marketing and communications. The profile details engineering alumnus Brook Davenport’s first year working on a NASCAR pit crew, giving readers a behind-the-scenes look at the Monster Energy Cup races. The article was designed by Reavey with photography by James Burke.

Earlier this year, CatholicU magazine was honored with a Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Accolades award for achievement in staff writing.
